The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was founded in 1880 for the purpose establishing uniformity for shop drawing symbols, pulleys, machine screws, and key seats. As the industrial revolution blossomed, the need for standardization increased. Not only to allow for the integration of equipment, but alos to ensure safety.

By 1884, ASME released their first set of testing standards for boilers and by 1915 the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code was published. Since its release, these codes and standards have been continually updated to keep pace with new materials and technology procedures.

S Stamp

Power Boilers (over 15psi steam, 160 psi water and temperature exceeding 250 F) shall be stamped ASME (S) and National Boiler (N.B.)

R Stamp

The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors offers the REPAIR CERTIFICATE of AUTHORIZATION and "R" stamp for the repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels, and other pressure-retaining items. Detailed requirements are included in the current edition of the National Board Inspection Code (NB-23). "
